King Herod the Great (which wasn’t such a s great guy, to say the least), renowned for his architectural marvels, built the fortress around the year 30 BCE. Centuries later, during the Jewish revolt against Rome (68 CE), a group of Jewish zealots captured Masada, which turned out to be the final stand of the rebellion and Jewisg presence in the land of Israel for the next 2000 years. The siege by the Roman forces was climaxed by a tragic yet defiant act, when in 73 CE, the 960 rebels on the mountain chose death over surrender. Their story continued to inspire with its themes of courage, heroism, and unwavering spirit, serving as a symbol in modern times as well.

Explore the remarkably well-preserved remains, preserved and partly reconstructed to honor the site’s history and its importance. Walk through King Herod’s grand northern palace, perched on terraces overlooking the Dead Sea and dramatic gorge below. Discover a Roman-style bathhouse adorned with colorful mosaics and murals. Other structures like the western palace, Jewish ritual baths (mikveh), storerooms, watchtowers, and even a synagogue, all whisper the stories of Masada’s past. Artifacts like pottery, scrolls, and coins further enrich the experience.

Depending on the season (as the area is extremely hot in Summer) you can hike up the winding Snake Path (around an hour climb) for a challenging ascent, or take the scenic cable car from the visitor’s center at the foot of the mountain. Once at the top, witness the spectacular panorama of the Moab Mountains and the Dead Sea – a truly inspiring way to begin your exploration of this powerful historical landmark.
